New York (April 25, 2022) — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) today announced Shelley R. McDonald, DO, PhD, MCG, as 2023 Clinician of the Year. Dr. McDonald, who is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, will be honored at the 2023 AGS Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS23) being held in Long Beach, CA, from May 4-6 (preconference day is May 3).

“Our 2023 Clinician of the year, Dr. Shelley McDonald, is a national champion for improved perioperative care of older adults undergoing surgery,” said AGS President G. Michael Harper, MD, AGSF. “She is the Geriatrics Medical Director of the Perioperative Optimization of Senior Health (POSH) program at Duke. In that role, she exemplifies the team-based approach to care that is the hallmark of geriatrics practice, always putting the older person at the center of care with a focus on their goals and needs. An extraordinary geriatrician, she has collaborated with surgical champions to reach across disciplines and specialties to build POSH in a way that is inspiring others to implement POSH at their own institutions.”

New York, NY (April 20, 2023) — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the AGS Health in Aging Foundation today announced that Elizabeth L. Whitlock, MD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is the 2023 recipient of the Jeffrey H. Silverstein Memorial Award for Emerging Investigators in the Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. 

The award will be presented at the 2023 AGS Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS23) which is being held in Long Beach, CA from May 4-6 (preconference day is May 3).  The award recognizes Dr. Whitlock for her cross-cutting work in geriatrics, anesthesiology, and epidemiology.

New York (April 19, 2022) — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the AGS Health in Aging Foundation (HiAF) today announced that the 2023 Thomas and Catherine Yoshikawa Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement in Clinical Investigation will be awarded to Dae Kim, MD, MPH, ScD,  Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Associate Scientist at the Marcus Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, and Attending Geriatrician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. 

The award will be presented at the AGS 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS23), May 4-6 (pre-conference day May 3).  At the conference, Dr. Kim will deliver a lecture on Unleashing Frailty from Laboratory to Real World.

The AGS Board and Nominating Committee are comprised of geriatrics health professionals who are committed to improving the health, independence, and quality of life for all of us as we age. The following AGS Members were elected to the AGS Board of Directors by AGS members:

Mark Supiano, MD, AGSF, AGS President-Elect

Mark Supiano, MD, AGSF is the Chief of the Geriatrics Division at the University of Utah, where he also serves as the Executive Director of the university’s Center on Aging. An AGS member since 1985, Dr. Supiano has held many leadership roles within the Society, including: Program Chair of the 2006 AGS Annual Scientific Meeting, Associate Editor of the JAGS Editorial Board (2000-2005), and as a Board Member of the ADGAP Board of Directors (2007-2017), ultimately serving as both its President and Board Chair. Dr. Supiano is now concluding his third year as AGS Treasurer.

AGS supports CMS decision to Maintain Current National Coverage Determination for Monoclonal Antibodies

New York (March 2, 2023) — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) supports the decision from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to not reconsider its prior national coverage determination (NCD) for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved monoclonal antibodies directed against amyloid for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).  We appreciate CMS’ commitment to expeditiously review any new evidence that comes available that could lead to a reconsideration and change in the NCD, such as evidence that answers the Coverage with Evidence Development (CED) questions or approval by the FDA based upon evidence of clinical benefit.

NEW YORK (November 21, 2022) – Given the anticipated increase in COVID-19 and influenza cases this fall and winter, America’s healthcare professional organizations are coming together to remind the public of the importance of vaccinations and early treatment. A strong recommendation from a trusted clinician is one of the most effective strategies to increase vaccine uptake. We encourage our members to use every interaction with patients as an opportunity to make strong vaccine recommendations, educate and answer questions about prevention and treatment options, encourage vaccination, and where feasible provide vaccination.

NEW YORK (November 10, 2022) —The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) today opened a public comment period for reviewing the draft updated 2022 AGS Beers Criteria® for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. Last updated in 2019, the AGS Beers® Criteria remain one of the most frequently cited reference tools in geriatrics, detailing certain types of medications which may be inappropriate to prescribe to older people who are not receiving hospice or palliative care. Comments from any and all members of the public—accepted only at https://www.americangeriatrics.org/form/ags-beers-criteria-public-comment through 5pm ET on December 9, 2022—will help inform the final version of the AGS 2022 Updated Beers® Criteria, slated for release this fall. 

For their proposed 2022 update, the interprofessional panel of geriatrics experts responsible for the AGS Beers® Criteria identified more than 40 potentially problematic medications or classes of medications presently organized across five lists:
