Our work on behalf of older adults, caregivers, and geriatrics healthcare professionals brings us to the cutting-edge of challenges and opportunities across healthcare. Learn more about several of our specific ongoing projects below.
Advancing Geriatrics Research: AGS/NIA Conference Series
The AGS will continue a series of prestigious scientific conferences on emerging issues in geriatrics thanks to sustained funding from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Conference Cooperative Agreement Program.
Advancing Healthcare that is Free of Discrimination
- The AGS future vision is that we all are living in a society where we are supported by and able to contribute to communities where ageism, ableism, classism, homophobia, racism, sexism, xenophobia, and other forms of bias and discrimination no longer impact healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for older adults and their caregivers. AGS is committed to taking purposeful steps towards achieving our vision for the future and we have incorporated a priority that cuts across all of our programs, products, and advocacy into our strategies for achieving our vision.
AGS/AGING LEARNING Collaborative: R25 Grant
- The AGS/AGING LEARNING Collaborative is an "R25" grant awarded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The collaborative will aim to fill educational and training gaps in multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) research.
AGS Older Adults Vaccine Initiative
- AGS is one of seven specialty medical societies with a subaward under a Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) contract with the CDC to increase adult vaccination rates (across all vaccines) in this country, called Improving Adult Immunization Rates for COVID19, Influenza, and Routine Adult Vaccinations through Partnerships and Medical Subspeciality Professional Societies.
Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Program
AGS has partnered with UCLA to disseminate and market their award-winning Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care (ADC) Program. The ADC Program is designed to help patients and their families with the complex medical, behavioral and social needs of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. Dissemination of The ADC Program is an opportunity under a UCLA grant with the support of The John A. Hartford Foundation.
Emerging Leaders in Aging Program
The AGS has partnered with Tideswell at UCSF and the Association of Geriatric Academic Programs (ADGAP) on a National Leadership Development Program. The program is designed for emerging leaders in the field of aging, offering a hands-on, practical platform for developing clinical, research, policy, and education skills.
Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative
The John A. Hartford Foundation and The Gary and Mary West Health Institute launched the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) to further enhance emergency department (ED) care for older adults. The program brings together experts from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and a growing number of hospitals and health systems.
The Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative
The Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative (GSI) has conducted collaborative activities with numerous organizations and leaders in academic medicine, all designed to increase awareness of and knowledge in the care of older adults among surgical and related medical specialists.
The Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program Coordinating Center
Across this three-year initiative, the AGS will create and oversee a GWEP Coordinating Center funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation to provide assistance to GWEP sites through national meetings, networking opportunities, mentoring, a centralized repository of resources for professional and public education, and site visit consultations with geriatrics experts.
Making the Business Case for Geriatrics
In 2021, ADGAP, in collaboration with AGS, launched an initiative on Making the Business Case for Geriatrics. Under this initiative, AGS/ADGAP are building three resources to support AGS/ADGAP members: (1) a longitudinal benchmarking study (in partnership with Phairify); (2) a toolkit to provide members with tools and resources for making the business case for geriatrics; and (3) a webinar series on Geriatrics and the Changing Landscape of Healthcare.
Reframing Aging
- In 2014, the AGS and seven other leading aging-focused organizations formed an unprecedented partnership, the Leaders of Aging Organizations (LAO), to create a better public understanding of older adults’ needs and contributions to society—and subsequently to improve health and care for us all as we age.
