Through a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), AGS has updated and expanded programs targeting older driver safety, focused on enhancing a healthcare professional’s ability to assess and counsel older drivers.
As part of this AGS-NHTSA collaboration, our guide puts healthcare professionals on the road to success for assessing and counseling older drivers, with a goal of optimizing the safety of those can still drive, and providing transportation planning for those who retire from driving. With older adults accounting for 18 percent of annual traffic fatalities, the Clinician’s Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers (4th Edition) translates research findings and public health initiatives into practical, person-centered advice for helping older drivers safely navigate the open road.
