Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease (2021)
The five-year U13 Bench-to-Bedside conference grant is a cooperative effort between the National Institute on Aging and the American Geriatrics Society.
About the Conference
The 2021 AGS/NIA/ACC U13 virtual conference took place on Oct. 18-19 and was the third and final conference in the current series. It focused on the interface between Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease. Heart disease and cancer remain the two leading causes of death among older Americans, but medical advancements have transformed them into chronic conditions. Recent attention has focused on the clinical interface between these two conditions. Age-related changes in inflammatory response, stem cell regeneration, or metabolism and insulin regulation may be implicated in the pathogenesis of both conditions. Emerging data suggest chemo-therapy cardiotoxicity involves disrupted cell signaling and cellular senescence. Prognostication and treatment decisions for each condition are impacted by the presence of the other condition. The conference included a professional development track for young investigators who are rising stars in their fields to ensure continued excellence in tomorrow’s generation of geriatrics researchers.
