Older Driver Traffic Safety

AGS is continuing work under a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to update and expand programs targeting older driver safety, originally implemented by the American Medical Association (AMA).  The current program is focused on enhancing a healthcare professional’s ability to assess and counsel older drivers.

As part of this AGS-NHTSA collaboration, a newly updated guide is putting healthcare professionals on the road to success for assessing and counseling older drivers. With older adults accounting for 10 percent of all people injured in traffic crashes annually and 17 percent of annual traffic fatalities, the Clinician’s Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers (3rd Edition) translates research findings and public health initiatives into practical, person-centered advice for safely navigating the open road.

The AGS also has begun working on a mobile app, which will be made available in the coming weeks.
